What is Acne?
Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with oil and dead skin cells. It can cause whiteheads, blackheads, pimples, and deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that can be painful and may result in scarring.
While acne is most common during adolescence, it can affect people of all ages. At Fairview Dermatology, we understand the physical and emotional impact of acne and are committed to helping our patients achieve clearer, healthier skin.
The Impact of Acne
Acne is more than just a skin condition; it can have a significant impact on a person's quality of life, affecting:
- Self-esteem and confidence
- Social interactions and relationships
- Mental health, potentially leading to anxiety or depression
- Professional life and career opportunities
At Fairview Dermatology, we understand the emotional toll acne can take. Our comprehensive approach to treatment addresses both the physical symptoms and the psychological impact of acne, helping you regain confidence in your skin and yourself.
What Causes Acne?
Acne is a complex skin condition that can be triggered by various factors. Understanding these causes can help in developing an effective treatment plan. Common causes of acne include:
- Excess Oil Production: Overactive sebaceous glands can produce too much oil, leading to clogged pores.
- Dead Skin Cells: When dead skin cells don't shed properly, they can mix with oil and clog hair follicles.
- Bacteria: Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) bacteria can multiply in clogged pores, causing inflammation.
- Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormones, especially during puberty, menstruation, and pregnancy, can trigger acne.
- Genetics: A family history of acne can increase your likelihood of developing it.
- Certain Medications: Some drugs, including corticosteroids and lithium, can contribute to acne development.
- Diet: While still debated, some studies suggest that certain foods may exacerbate acne in some individuals.
- Stress: High stress levels can worsen acne in some people.
At Fairview Dermatology, Dr. Hudson will work with you to identify potential triggers and develop a comprehensive treatment plan tailored to your unique skin needs.

What our patients have to say
I'm a teenager so obviously having someone examining my acne and scarring and talking to me about it is a nightmare, but I love this place the staff are so sweet and Dr. Hudson is so kind and explains everything in a way that makes sense! if you're nervous about treating your skin/visiting a dermatologist I definitely recommend this office. My skin is so clear and I feel so confident and comfortable both in my day to day life as well as at my appointments here!
- Natalie R.
Wonderful experience! Dr. Hudson takes his time with you and is very pleasant. His entire staff is welcoming and kind. He has helped clear up my acne and I am so grateful! He is worth me making the hour drive to see him!
- Christina A.
Dr. Hudson is the absolute best! He truly takes his time, listens, and genuinely cares for his patients. He was amazing with my daughter and made her feel beautiful. He tackled her acne issues head on and the results are incredible! She has such clear and beautiful skin all thanks to Dr. Hudson. We won't go anywhere else. He is a blessing.
- Jaime A.
The amount of kindness, care and compassion that Dr. Hudson showed my daughter floored me. It was quite a drive for us, but we'll worth it. I would recommend Dr. Hudson without any hesitation.
- Christy H.
This place is fantastic. Please don't go anywhere else. Save your time. This is it. The place was immaculate. The receptionist was super sweet. The tech was also super sweet. The doctor was super informative and communicative. They were all so sweet to my daughter that was with me. They had her involved in my appointment which was the most precious thing. They care about the whole person.
- Marli N.
Dr. Hudson and all of his staff, from the office ladies to his assistant, were phenomenal. This is hands down one of the kindest, informative, and most helpful medical offices I have ever been to. I originally brought my son here after getting a referral from his pediatrician for a specific skin issue he was having & was so impressed that I will be switching myself over to Dr. Hudson for all dermatology-related needs.
- Caroline D.
We had an absolutely amazing experience. I was blown away by his bedside manner and his genuine care and concern for my son. I highly recommend his practice and will be sending all of my friends to him.
- Rae P. L.
We love Dr Andrew and staff, we love everything about this clinic, the best of the bests and I'm speaking from years of experience with dermatologist since my daughter had an eczema since she was about 6 months old, it was a struggle taking care of her and another toddler with not much help since both me and my husband were busy with our jobs. We had to drive to Dallas to see her doc. Not much doctors yet in Allen yet at that time, no YouTube, Google…nowadays it's much easier. If you need to see a dermatologist, go to Dr Hudson, you will never go wrong, i didn't.
- Marites H.
We got an appointment within a couple of days, registration process was super easy, nurses, administration were very nice .. then, there was Dr. Hudson, who was a total rockstar. He immediately put the kids at ease. He treated my son's wart with freeze and it was great. Then he checked out a mole on my daughter's scalp. Not only did he give us reassurance and a fair monitoring plan, he even gave her such encouragement because she said she wants to be a doctor. It was also nice that he is part of the community and has kids in the local schools! It felt like family..
- Eleanor B.
Dr. Hudson is amazing! He is excellent with kids and made my daughter's visits so much easier for her! My entire family sees Dr. Hudson and will continue. We highly recommend him!

Frequently Asked Questions About Acne Treatment
How long does it take to see results from acne treatment?
The timeline for seeing results can vary depending on the treatment method and severity of your acne. Generally, you may start to see improvements within 4-6 weeks, but it can take several months to achieve significant clearing. Consistency with your treatment plan is key to achieving the best results.
Can diet affect acne?
While the relationship between diet and acne is complex, some studies suggest that certain foods such as skim milk, whey protein and a high glycemic load may exacerbate acne in some individuals. A balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains may contribute to overall skin health. However, dietary changes alone are usually not sufficient to treat moderate to severe acne.
Is it okay to pop pimples?
It's best to avoid popping pimples as this can lead to further inflammation, infection, and potential scarring. Instead, stick to your prescribed treatment plan and use spot treatments recommended by your dermatologist. For stubborn or painful blemishes, professional extractions performed by a dermatologist can be a safer alternative.
Can acne be cured permanently?
While acne can't be 'cured' in the traditional sense, it can be effectively managed and controlled. With proper treatment and ongoing care, many people achieve long-term clearance of their acne. However, because factors like hormones and genetics play a role in acne development, some individuals may experience occasional breakouts even after successful treatment. The key is to work with your dermatologist to develop a long-term management plan that keeps your skin clear and healthy.
Are there any side effects to acne treatments?
Side effects can vary depending on the specific treatment. Topical treatments may cause dryness, redness, or peeling of the skin, especially when you first start using them. Oral medications can have more systemic side effects, which your dermatologist will discuss with you before prescribing. It's important to discuss any concerns about side effects with Dr. Hudson, who can help you weigh the benefits and risks of each treatment option.
