What are Birthmarks?
Birthmarks are colored marks on the skin that are present at birth or develop shortly after. They can vary in size, shape, and color, and may be flat or raised. While most birthmarks are harmless, some may require monitoring or treatment.
At Fairview Dermatology, we understand that birthmarks can sometimes cause cosmetic concerns or, in rare cases, indicate underlying health issues. We offer expert evaluation and a range of treatment options when necessary.

Types of Birthmarks
- Pigmented Birthmarks: Moles, café-au-lait spots
- Vascular Birthmarks: Port-wine stains, infantile hemangiomas
- Mongolian Spots: Blue-gray patches
- Nevus Sebaceous: Yellowish-orange, hairless patches
- Pigmented Birthmarks: These include common moles (nevi) and café-au-lait spots. They're caused by clusters of pigment cells (melanocytes) or increased pigment (melanin) in the skin.
- Vascular Birthmarks: These are caused by abnormal blood vessels in the skin. Port-wine stains are flat red or purple marks, while hemangiomas are raised, bright red birthmarks. Hemangiomas tend to grow rapidly months 1-3 and stabilize by 6 months of age.
- Mongolian Spots: These are flat, blue-gray patches often found on the lower back or buttocks. They're more common in individuals with darker skin tones.
- Nevus Sebaceous: These are hairless, slightly raised, yellowish-orange patches usually found on the scalp or face. While often removed for cosmetic reasons, they have the potential to develop benign tumors and even skin cancers thus they often require monitoring.
When to Be Concerned
While most birthmarks are harmless, you should consult a dermatologist if you notice:
- Rapid growth or change in appearance
- Bleeding or ulceration
- Associated pain or itching
- Interference with vision, breathing, or other bodily functions
- Multiple or large café-au-lait spots (may indicate neurofibromatosis)
- Multiple hemangiomas: ≥5 may indicate internal involvement
- Hemangiomas in the following locations/patterns: -beard distribution (can involve airway) -around the eyes (ocular complications)
If you're concerned about a birthmark, schedule an appointment with us for a thorough evaluation.
Treatment Options
At Fairview Dermatology, we offer various treatment options for birthmarks, depending on their type and individual needs:
- Timoptic drops for infantile hemangiomas (early treatment is important to prevent rapid growth phase)
- Monitoring and regular check-ups
Dr. Hudson will thoroughly examine your birthmark and discuss your medical history to determine the best approach. We understand that birthmarks can sometimes cause cosmetic concerns, and we're committed to finding a solution that addresses both medical and aesthetic aspects.
Remember, many birthmarks don't require treatment. However, early evaluation is key to identifying any that might need intervention or monitoring.

Dr. Hudson is one of the best, most kind doctors I have ever met! He explains things incredibly well, extremely knowledgeable, and easy to talk to. Frequently Asked Questions About Birthmarks
Are all birthmarks present at birth?
Not necessarily. While many birthmarks are visible at birth, some may develop in the first few weeks or months after birth. For example, hemangiomas often appear in the first few weeks of life.
Can birthmarks be removed completely?
The success of birthmark removal depends on the type, size, and location of the birthmark. Some can be completely removed, while others may be significantly lightened or reduced in size. Dr. Hudson can provide a more accurate assessment after examining your specific birthmark.
Are birthmarks hereditary?
Some types of birthmarks can run in families, suggesting a genetic component. However, many birthmarks occur sporadically without any family history.
Can birthmarks become cancerous?
Most birthmarks are benign and do not become cancerous. However, certain types, such as large congenital moles or nevus sebaceous, have a slightly increased risk of developing skin cancer over time. Regular monitoring by a dermatologist is important for these types of birthmarks.
