Understanding Ringworm

Despite its name, ringworm is not caused by a worm but by various types of fungi. It's characterized by a ring-shaped rash on the skin and can affect almost any part of the body.

Ringworm is contagious but can be effectively treated with proper medical care and good hygiene practices.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

  • Ring-shaped Rash: Red, scaly patches with clearer skin in the center
  • Itching: Often accompanied by burning sensation
  • Spreading: Rash may spread outwards and appear on different body parts
  • Hair Loss: If ringworm affects the scalp

Dr. Hudson can typically diagnose ringworm through a visual examination. In some cases, a skin scraping or culture may be taken to confirm the diagnosis.

Treatment Options

At Fairview Dermatology, we offer several treatment options for ringworm:

  • Topical antifungal medications for mild cases
  • Oral antifungal medications for more severe or persistent infections
  • Combination treatments for faster resolution

Dr. Hudson will develop a personalized treatment plan based on the location and severity of your ringworm infection.

Prevention and Management

To help prevent and manage ringworm:

  • Keep skin clean and dry
  • Avoid sharing personal items like towels or combs
  • Wear shoes in public areas like locker rooms and swimming pools
  • Practice good hygiene when handling pets
  • Wash hands frequently

While ringworm can be uncomfortable, it's generally easy to treat with proper care. However, it's important to complete the full course of treatment to prevent recurrence.

If you suspect you have ringworm, it's best to seek treatment promptly to prevent spreading the infection to others.
