Understanding Skin Tags
Skin tags, also known as acrochordons, are small, soft, flesh-colored growths that hang off the skin by a connecting stalk. They're completely benign and very common, especially as people age.
While skin tags are harmless, they can sometimes become irritated or may be cosmetically bothersome. Our team offers safe and effective removal options.

AND SURROUNDING AREAS INCLUDING ALLEN, MCKINNEY, LUCAS, PLANO, & FRISCO
Characteristics and Causes
- Appearance: Small, soft, flesh-colored or slightly darker growths
- Size: Usually a few millimeters, but can grow larger
- Location: Often found in skin folds (neck, armpits, groin, under breasts)
- Causes: Friction, hormonal changes, genetics, obesity
Dr. Hudson can typically diagnose skin tags through a visual examination. In rare cases where a growth looks unusual, a biopsy may be performed to rule out other conditions.
Treatment Options
At Fairview Dermatology, we offer several treatment options for skin tags:
- Cryotherapy (freezing the skin tag off)
- Electrocautery (burning the skin tag off)
- Snip excision (cutting the skin tag off)
- Ligation (tying off the skin tag)
Dr. Hudson will recommend the most appropriate treatment based on the size and location of your skin tags, as well as your personal preferences.
When to Seek Treatment
You might consider having skin tags removed if:
- They become irritated or catch on clothing or jewelry
- They affect your appearance or self-esteem
- They're in an area that's frequently rubbed or irritated
- You're unsure if it's a skin tag or another type of growth
It's important to have any new or changing skin growths evaluated by a dermatologist to ensure they are not signs of more serious conditions.
Never attempt to remove skin tags at home, as this can lead to bleeding, infection, or scarring.
What our patients have to say
For almost a decade I felt uncomfortable with a skin tag on my inner thigh. For ten years I allowed the growth to get to a tennis ball-size length. I thought it wouldn't affect my walking until it did. I was not in any rush to get it off as I wouldn't say I like doctors and dental offices. I do not encourage Youtubing anything that has to do with a removal because doing this increased my anxiety. I was like a dog that just walked into a veterinary office, I was looking for the nearest exit. But I wanted my mobility back. Dr. Hudson and his staff went above and beyond making me feel comfortable. I was reassured that I would be taken care of and feel little to no discomfort before, during, and after the procedure. The follow-up by office staff and reassurance that if I needed something was just as pleasant as the laughs we had during the procedure to ease my fears. I cannot begin to express my admiration for this practice. I was glad that my spouse wanted to go into JCPenney the day I saw this practice from the depths of the women's department back exit. Thank you Fairview Dermatology!

Dr. Hudson is one of the best, most kind doctors I have ever met! He explains things incredibly well, extremely knowledgeable, and easy to talk to.
