What are they?
Moles, also known as nevi, are common skin growths that occur when pigment-producing cells (melanocytes) in your skin grow in clusters or clumps.
Most moles are harmless, but in rare cases, they can develop into melanoma, a serious form of skin cancer. Regular monitoring and evaluation of your moles is crucial for early detection of any potential issues.

Types of Moles
- Common Moles: Usually small, round, and uniform in color
- Atypical Moles (Dysplastic Nevi): Larger, irregular shape, and varied colors
- Congenital Moles: Present at birth, can be large
- Acquired Moles: Develop over time, often due to sun exposure
- Common Moles: These are typically small (less than 6mm), round, and uniform in color. They can be flat or slightly raised and are usually brown, tan, or pink. Common moles are harmless and rarely turn into skin cancer.
- Atypical Moles (Dysplastic Nevi): These moles are larger than common moles and have irregular shapes or colors. They may have a mixture of tan, brown, and dark brown coloration. While most atypical moles are benign, they have a higher chance of developing into melanoma.
- Congenital Moles: Present at birth, these moles can vary greatly in size. Large congenital moles (greater than 20cm) have a higher risk of developing into melanoma and should be monitored closely by a dermatologist.
- Acquired Moles: These moles develop over time, often due to sun exposure. They can range in size, shape, and color and are more likely to develop into melanoma if they are large, irregular, or have multiple colors.
