Understanding Skin Cancer
Skin cancer occurs when skin cells undergo abnormal changes, often due to UV radiation damage. While it's the most common form of cancer, it's also highly treatable when caught early.
- Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC): The most prevalent form, BCC typically appears as a pearly or waxy bump, or a flat, flesh-colored lesion. While rarely life-threatening, it can be disfiguring if left untreated.
- Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC): Often presenting as a firm, red nodule or a flat lesion with a scaly surface. SCC is more aggressive than BCC and can spread to other parts of the body if not treated promptly.
- Melanoma: The most serious form of skin cancer, melanoma can develop in existing moles or appear as new, dark spots on the skin. Early detection is crucial, as melanoma can be life-threatening if it spreads.

How should I prepare for my skin cancer screening?
Before your appointment, remove all makeup and nail polish. Wear your hair loose to allow easy examination of your scalp. Make a note of any concerns or changes you've noticed in your skin. On the day of the screening, you'll change into a gown for a thorough examination.
What happens if a suspicious spot is found?
If we identify an area of concern, we may recommend a biopsy. This involves taking a small sample of the skin for further analysis. The procedure is quick and performed under local anesthesia. Results typically come back within a week, and we'll discuss the findings and any necessary next steps with you promptly.
How often should I have a skin cancer screening?
The frequency of screenings depends on various factors including your personal and family history, skin type, and previous sun exposure. Generally, we recommend annual screenings for most adults. However, those with a history of skin cancer or other risk factors may need more frequent checks. We'll provide personalized recommendations during your visit.
Can I do anything to reduce my risk of skin cancer?
Absolutely! Protecting your skin from UV radiation is key. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 daily, wear protective clothing and seek shade when outdoors. Avoid tanning beds, and perform regular self-exams to familiarize yourself with your skin. Early detection and prevention are your best defenses against skin cancer.
