What are Angiomas?

Angiomas are benign vascular growths that appear on the skin. They are formed by small blood vessels that have clustered together, creating a visible red or purple spot on the skin's surface.

While angiomas are generally harmless, they can sometimes be a cosmetic concern. In rare cases, they may bleed or cause discomfort, necessitating treatment.

Types of Angiomas

  • Cherry Angiomas: Small, bright red dots on the skin
  • Spider Angiomas: Central red spot with tiny blood vessels radiating outward
  • Angiokeratomas: Dark red to purple, scaly, and wart-like in appearance

Each type of angioma has distinct characteristics:

  • Cherry Angiomas are the most common type. They typically appear in adults over 30 and can increase in number with age.
  • Spider Angiomas are often found on the face, neck, and upper body. They're common in children and pregnant women.
  • Angiokeratomas are less common and can appear anywhere on the body, but are most often found on the lower extremities or the genitals.

When to Seek Treatment

While most angiomas are harmless, you should consider seeking treatment if:

  • The angioma is in an area prone to irritation or frequent bumping
  • It bleeds easily or frequently
  • There's a sudden increase in size or number of angiomas
  • The appearance is causing significant cosmetic concern
  • You're unsure if the growth is an angioma or something else

If you're concerned about any skin growth, it's always best to have it evaluated by a dermatologist.

Treatment Options

At Fairview Dermatology, we offer various treatment options for angiomas:

  • Electrocauterization: Using an electric current to burn off the angioma
  • Cryosurgery: Freezing the angioma with liquid nitrogen
  • Shave excision: Physically removing the angioma from the skin's surface

Dr. Hudson will assess your specific case and recommend the most appropriate treatment. The choice of treatment depends on factors such as the size and location of the angioma, as well as your personal preferences.

Most treatments are quick, minimally invasive, and can be performed in our office with little to no downtime.

Frequently Asked Questions About Angiomas

Are angiomas cancerous?

No, angiomas are benign (non-cancerous) growths. However, it's always important to have any new or changing skin growths evaluated by a dermatologist to ensure an accurate diagnosis.

Can angiomas go away on their own?

Most angiomas do not go away on their own. Cherry angiomas, in particular, tend to be permanent once they develop. However, spider angiomas in children sometimes resolve spontaneously.

Is it possible to prevent angiomas?

There's no known way to prevent angiomas, as their exact cause is unknown.

Do angioma treatments leave scars?

Most angioma treatments are designed to be minimally invasive and typically don't leave noticeable scars. However, the risk of scarring can vary depending on the size and location of the angioma, as well as the treatment method used. Dr. Hudson will discuss any potential risks with you before treatment.
