What is a Dermatofibroma?

A dermatofibroma is a common, benign skin growth that typically appears as a small, firm bump on the skin. These growths are usually harmless and don't require treatment unless they cause discomfort or cosmetic concerns.

At Fairview Dermatology, we understand that even benign growths can be worrying. We offer expert evaluation to confirm the diagnosis and provide treatment options if needed, ensuring your peace of mind and skin health.

Characteristics of Dermatofibromas

Dermatofibromas typically have the following characteristics:

  • Small, round growths, usually 3-10 mm in diameter
  • Firm to the touch
  • Color ranges from pink to light brown or dark brown
  • Most common on the legs, but can occur anywhere on the body
  • May be slightly raised or dome-shaped
  • Often more easily felt than seen

If you notice a growth with these characteristics, it's a good idea to have it evaluated by a dermatologist to confirm the diagnosis and rule out other conditions.

Causes and Risk Factors

  • Skin Trauma: Often develops after minor injury or insect bite
  • Gender: More common in women
  • Age: Can occur at any age, but most common in young adults
  • Immune System: May be more common in immunosuppressed individuals

The exact cause of dermatofibromas is not fully understood. However, they are thought to develop as a result of a minor injury to the skin, such as an insect bite or from cutting your legs while shaving.

At Fairview Dermatology, we take a comprehensive approach to evaluating your skin. While dermatofibromas are benign, we ensure a thorough examination to rule out any concerning features.

Treatment Options

At Fairview Dermatology, we offer monitoring vs treating dermatofibromas, depending on your needs and preferences:

  • Monitoring: If asymptomatic, regular observation may be sufficient
  • Surgical excision: Complete removal of the growth

Dr. Hudson will thoroughly examine your dermatofibroma and discuss your symptoms and concerns to determine the best treatment approach. We understand that even benign growths can cause anxiety or discomfort, and we're committed to providing you with the most appropriate care.

Remember, while dermatofibromas are typically harmless, any new or changing skin growth should be evaluated by a dermatologist to ensure proper diagnosis and care.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dermatofibromas

Are dermatofibromas cancerous?

No, dermatofibromas are benign (non-cancerous) growths. However, because they can sometimes resemble other skin conditions, it's important to have any new or changing skin growths evaluated by a dermatologist.

Can dermatofibromas go away on their own?

Dermatofibromas typically do not go away on their own. They tend to persist for years and may even last a lifetime. However, they usually don't cause any health problems and often don't require treatment unless they're bothersome.

Is it normal for a dermatofibroma to itch or be painful?

While dermatofibromas are usually asymptomatic, some people may experience itching or mild pain, especially if the growth is irritated by clothing or trauma. If a dermatofibroma becomes persistently painful or changes in appearance, it should be evaluated by a dermatologist.

Can I prevent dermatofibromas from forming?

There's no known way to prevent dermatofibromas from forming. However, protecting your skin from injuries and insect bites may help reduce the risk, as these are thought to be potential triggers for their development.
