What is Perioral Dermatitis?

Perioral dermatitis is a skin condition characterized by small red bumps that typically appear around the mouth, but can also affect the nose and eyes. It's most common in women between the ages of 16 and 45, but it can be seen in young patients.

While the exact cause is unknown, factors such as topical steroid use, certain skincare products, hormonal changes, and even the type of toothpaste used may contribute to its development.

Symptoms and Diagnosis

  • Red Bumps: Small, sometimes scaly bumps around the mouth
  • Mild Itching or Burning: Can be uncomfortable but not usually painful
  • Dry or Flaky Skin: In the affected area
  • Occasional Pustules: Small pus-filled bumps may appear

Dr. Hudson can typically diagnose perioral dermatitis through a visual examination and by reviewing your medical history. In some cases, additional tests may be performed to rule out other conditions.

Treatment Options

At Fairview Dermatology, we offer several treatment options for perioral dermatitis:

  • Topical antibiotics (e.g., metronidazole, erythromycin)
  • Oral antibiotics for more severe cases
  • Topical anti-inflammatory medications
  • Discontinuation of topical steroids and certain skincare products
  • Gentle skincare routine recommendations

Dr. Hudson will work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan based on the severity of your condition and your individual needs.

Prevention and Management

To help prevent and manage perioral dermatitis:

  • Avoid using topical steroids on the face unless directed by a dermatologist
  • Use gentle, fragrance-free skincare products
  • Avoid heavy face creams and fluorinated toothpaste
  • Protect your skin from harsh weather conditions

It's important to be patient with treatment, as perioral dermatitis can take several weeks to months to fully resolve. Consistent adherence to your treatment plan and avoiding potential triggers are key to managing this condition.

Regular follow-ups with Dr. Hudson can help monitor your progress and adjust your treatment as needed.
